This part of the bike path along the Canal Du Midi is unpaved.

 

Bicycle Route Description

 

Continue cycling along the south bank of the Canal Du Midi until you reach the Malpas Tunnel.  Cross over the tunnel and continue cycling along the north side after this tunnel.

 

Historical Information

 

Poilhes.  The red metal pedestrian bridge dates from 1927, and was build by the local military garrison so that its commander could more easily visit his mistress.  The two cannons in the port are English cannons.  The F on the trunnion is most likely the mark of the founder John Fuller V who ran the foundry of Heathfield from 1679 to 1745.  (source).

 

Régismont-le-Haut.  Situated between Poilhes and the Malpas Tunnel, here archaeologists have found a 30,000 year old settlement.  It is on the north side of the Canal Du Midi.  Of course, access is forbidden.  During summer, digging continues here by archaeologists.  It is the most important open air prehistoric campsite found in Europe.  Link.

Colombiers.  Wednesday morning from 8AM to 12PM.  Very small market with about 5 vendors.

Colombiers.  Evening market every friday night from 6:30PM to 10PM in July and August.

Montady.  Monday from 8AM to 12PM on the Avenue des Platanes.  Very small market with about 5 vendors.
