Ancient Canal Du Midi Postcards and Photographs Carcassonne - Narbonne.

 

Pictured below: Canal Du Midi in Carcassonne, Pont d'Lena.  This bridge dates from 1810, which is when this part of the Canal Du Midi was constructed.  Before 1810 the canal flowed north of Carcassonne.  Notice how the towpath has deteriorated over the past 100 years.   It would be nice to see this put back into its original condition for bicycles to pass here.

Pictured below: Canal Du Midi Port of Carcassonne.  The Canal Du Midi originally flowed 2 km north of Carcassonne, following the Fresquel creek.  Paul Riquet was not opposed to having his canal go through Carcassonne, but was not able and willing to pay for it himself.  In order to get to Carcassonne, a lot of digging through some very hard rocks had to be done.  Paul Riquet requested money from the city of Carcassonne to help pay for this extra work.  But they refused.  Soon Carcassonne realized their mistake.  After much debate and discussions, the canal was finally diverted and passed for the first time here in 1810.
