This lock is named the Ecluse de l'Ocean because it is the first lock facing the Atlantic Ocean, when starting at the source of the canal. The next lock East of here is called the Ecluse de la Mediterranee, because it is the first lock facing the Mediterranean Sea. This lock is located 189.06 meters above sea level, as indicated on the panel pictured above. This lock used to be called the Ecluse de Montferrand.
The plaque on the lock keepers building of Thomas Jefferson, third US president, commemorates his voyage along the Canal Du Midi in 1787.
