This lock is named the Ecluse de la Mediterranee because it is the first lock facing the Mediterranean Sea, when starting at the source of the canal.  The next lock west of here is called the Ecluse de l'Ocean, because it is the first lock facing the Atlantic Ocean.  It is thus the highest lock on the eastern part of the canal.
