Originally part of the Nine Locks of Beziers, this lock allowed access to the Orb River. Boats would join the Orb River and rejoin the Canal Du Midi a few hundred meters downstream from here. Due to the unpredictable flow of this river, it was decided to make an aqueduct instead. This aqueduct was put into service in 1858. Subsequently this lock and its port (the port of Notre Dame) were abandoned.
