Trebes was the overnight rest-stop for the ancient Barque Postale, or post boat. This boat could carry up to 300 passengers.
Trebes is midway between Toulouse and Agde, being situated approximately 120 km from each.
The initial plans from 1666 for the Canal Royal (now called Canal Du Midi) had Trebes as the end point for the canal. Boats would join the Aude River from Trebes to the Mediterranean Sea. But the plans changed and the canal never actually joined the river. The river, however, does run very close to the canal.
The restaurant located at this lock is a bit more upscale and better than the restaurants located in the port of Trebes itself. The restaurant is called Le Moulin de Trebes and can be accessed using the small pedestrian bridge crossing the locks.
