Pechlaurier is the name of the hill opposite the lock. Pech is a word you see often around this area, and it means hill in English. Laurier is a type of tree called laurel in English. So Pechlaurier literally means the hill with laurel trees. There is a small trail going up to the top of this hill from which one can take nice pictures. Reaching the top of the hill takes about 5 minutes.
The lock-keeper also runs a small store at this location, selling items such as drinks, jams, and ice cream.
