Originally the Canal Du Midi did not pass through Carcassonne. Instead it followed a path north of Carcassonne, along the Fresquel Creek's valley from Castelnaudary to Trebes. This was the easiest and cheapest way to build the canal. This aqueduct was built when the canal was rerouted to pass through the center of Carcassonne.
