Puicheric - Homps

 

The bicycle path along the Canal Du Midi from Puicheric to Homps is unpaved and bumpy.  The path as you cross the Aquaduc de l'Argent-Double is at water level and thus very slippery (excess canal water flows over this purpose-build structure).  Be carefull not to fall here!

Cycle along the south bank of the Canal Du Midi until you reach Homps.

 

Historical Information

 

Ecluse de Puicheric, 1674, double lock.  Km 136.746  Height 4.63 m.

 

Epanchoir de l’Argent-Double, 1677-1694.  Km 140.5.   Constructed by Vauban.  Its 11 arches allow excess water from the Canal Du Midi to flow into the Argent-Double creek.  There is also a valve that can be opened up by hand to allow draining all the water out of the Canal Du Midi, for example to do maintenance work.

 

Aquaduc de l’Argent-Double, 1693. Km 140.6. The Argent-Double is a small creek that passes underneath the Canal Du Midi by way of the aquaduc.  This creek does not look like much in summer time, but it can become a raging river after a strong storm.

 

Ecluse de Jouarres, 1674, single lock.  Km 143.059  Height 3.62 m.

 

Aquaduc de Jouarres, 1674.  Here a small creek called the Jouarres passes underneath the Canal Du Midi.  This creek in turn feeds the recreational Jouarres lake north of Homps.   It is one of three aquaducs actually made by Paul Riquet,  pont-canal de l’Aiguille and pont-canal du Répudre being the other two.

Lac de Jouarres, located north of Homps, is a great place to take a swim.  It has lifeguards in summer, which makes it great for families with kids.  Games and food available as well.
