Bicycle Route Description

 

This part of the bicycle route is paved.  Follow bike path on north side of Canal Du Midi.

 

Historical Information

 

Ecluse de Castanet, 1673. Single lock (before 1977 it was a double lock).  Km 15.715.  Height: 4.98 m.  Bar/Restaurant at the lock (website) open year round.  This is the first elliptical lock you will encounter if coming from Toulouse.  An elliptical lock has walls that are curved instead of straight, a distinguishing feature of the Canal Du Midi.  This was a double lock up to 1980.  From 1977 to 1980 the downstream lock was lengthened by 10 meters, making the upriver lock redundant.

 

Ecluse de Vic, 1673.  Single lock.  Km 17.4  Height: 2.37 m.

Market Days along the Canal Du Midi

 

Ramonville has a large market on the avenue d’Occitanie every wednesday and saturday morning.  Food, clothing, arts.  This market is called the Marche de Plein Vent (full wind market).

Castanet-Tolosan gets its name from the fact that many chestnut trees used to grow there.  Traditional market every Tuesday in centre-ville.  This market has been active since 1641.
